Transitional spaces - an open door for children and youths at risk
A unique exhibition of photos titled "Transitional spaces - an open door for children and youths at risk" took place on the 10-th of May 2007 in the United Children's complex in the town of Pernik. The event was organized by the 16+ Day Youth Care Centre in Sofia together with the Youth Association Objective in Pernik.
One of the halls of the complex turned into a colorful space of 60 photos of youths from the 16+ Day Youth Care Centre. The photos were taken last year during a photo-drama training in the village of Rudartzi, mountain training in Maliovitza and a visit to the Home for mentally and physically disabled children in Vidrare. It was a challenge as well as a new "door" for the youths' imagination. The photos show their inner status. "The youths are artistic and non-standard. To change their life attitude, we had to involve them in useful activities", said in front of journalists Adelina Ivanova - a psychologist and a social worker at the Centre.
Guests at of the event were the deputy Neno Temelkov, Deputy Regional Director of Pernik, Mrs Balkandjiiska - Chief secretary of the Agency for Child protection, Aksinia Buteva from the Department of "Museums, galleries and art" - Ministry of Culture, Rrepresentative of Community Centre in Pernik, the Regional expert of State Agency for youth and sport, representatives form the Preventive informational centre in Pernik as well as representatives from the Red House for Culture and Debate in Sofia, journalists and citizens from Pernik, NGOs.
After the guests saw the photos they were invited to take part in a discussion on the same topic of the exhibition. 20 minutes film, representing the non-standard methods of working with children at risk and with disabilities, as well as the film "Loneliness can kill" were shown. Pepa and Miro - members of the 16+ Centre shared their stories with the audience and discussion started.
We hope that the photos we provide here can show the atmosphere of the exhibition.
